AI Overviews (Google)

AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated answer summaries that appear at the top of search results pages. Formerly known as Search Generative Experience (SGE), AI Overviews use Google's Gemini model to synthesize information from multiple sources and present a direct answer to the user's query. They represent Google's entry into AI-powered search and are changing how traditional search results work.

AI Overviews are significant because they combine the massive reach of Google Search with the AI-generated answer format. Google reported that AI Overviews are now shown for over 1 billion queries per month globally (Google I/O, 2025). Unlike standalone AI search engines that require users to switch platforms, AI Overviews appear within the Google results page that billions of people already use daily. Being cited in an AI Overview means a brand gets visibility at the top of Google's results with an AI endorsement, which carries substantial weight with users.

Optimizing for AI Overviews shares many principles with optimizing for other AI platforms, but there are Google-specific considerations. AI Overviews tend to favor content that already ranks well in traditional Google search, but ranking alone is not sufficient. The content also needs to be structured for AI extraction, factually accurate, and comprehensive enough to serve as a useful source for the AI summary. An Authoritas study found that only 1.3% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also appear in the top 10 organic results, suggesting that AI citation and traditional ranking are largely independent signals (Authoritas, 2024).
