Deep Research

What is Deep Research?

Deep research is an AI search mode that conducts multi-step investigation across many sources, producing comprehensive synthesized reports.

Deep research is an advanced AI search capability where the model autonomously performs multi-step investigation before generating a comprehensive answer. Unlike standard AI search which retrieves a handful of sources for a quick response, deep research mode visits dozens or even hundreds of web pages, extracts relevant information, cross-references facts, and synthesizes a thorough report. Both Google's Gemini and OpenAI's ChatGPT offer deep research features.

The process resembles how a human researcher would approach a complex question. The AI formulates sub-queries, evaluates sources for credibility, resolves conflicting information, and organizes findings into a structured document. A deep research session on Gemini or ChatGPT can take 2-5 minutes rather than seconds, but produces outputs that are significantly more comprehensive and well-sourced than standard responses. Google reports that deep research queries review an average of 50-100 sources per session (Google, 2025).

Deep research has significant implications for brand visibility. In standard AI search, a brand might compete against 5-10 sources for a citation. In deep research, the AI evaluates 50-100 sources, meaning more brands have an opportunity to appear but the competition for prominence within the synthesis is also greater. Content that is comprehensive, unique, and authoritative stands out in deep research results because the AI has enough context to distinguish genuinely valuable content from shallow imitators.

Optimizing for deep research requires creating content that withstands comparison. When an AI evaluates your page alongside 99 others, generic content that restates common knowledge will be overlooked. Content that provides original data, unique analysis, or expert perspectives that cannot be found elsewhere is what earns citations in deep research synthesis.

Key Statistics

  • Deep research queries review an average of 50-100 sources per session (Google, 2025)
  • Content cited in deep research results receives 3.8x more referral traffic than standard AI citations (BrightEdge, 2025)
