Information Gain

What is Information Gain?

Information gain measures how much new, unique information a page provides beyond what other top-ranking results already cover on the topic.

Information gain is a search ranking concept where AI and search platforms reward content that contributes new, unique information to a topic beyond what existing top-ranking results already cover. If the top 10 results for a query all make the same points, a page that adds original research, unique data, or a novel perspective provides high information gain and is more likely to be selected as a source by AI platforms.

Google filed a patent on "information gain scoring" (US Patent 11,769,017) that describes measuring the additive informational value of a document relative to other documents a user has already seen. While the patent describes a traditional search application, the concept is even more relevant for AI search. When an AI platform evaluates multiple sources to synthesize an answer, it naturally prioritizes sources that contribute unique information. Repeating what every other source says adds nothing to the AI's synthesis.

Content with high information gain includes original research and proprietary data, first-hand case studies and experience reports, unique expert analysis not available elsewhere, primary source interviews and quotes, and novel frameworks or methodologies. A 2025 analysis by Ahrefs found that pages with original data or research are 3.6x more likely to earn backlinks and 2.2x more likely to be cited in AI-generated answers compared to content that synthesizes existing information.

Building information gain into your content strategy means investing in original research, surveys, data analysis, and expert contributions. This is more resource-intensive than creating derivative content, but the payoff in both AI visibility and traditional SEO is significantly higher. Content with genuine information gain creates a defensible competitive advantage that cannot be replicated by competitors simply rewriting existing material.
